Mr. Hooper was dead to begin with. Which would have been far more inconvenient if Big Bird couldn't see him. Especially since 6 year old 8'2" yellow birds tend to be a certain amount of trouble anyway and Mr. Hooper suddenly has a lot of free time on his hands until the rest of his friends are able to see him.

Mumford isn't the best at magic and sometimes he screws up. More rarely, though it still happens, he screws up in a way that he can't fix without some serious research. And often times, that involves a protector here or there. This time, it affect a good proportion of the street. And it was sheer luck that non-protector adults weren't on the street and that Alan and Penelope were off the street. Regardless, this was going to be a very difficult time period.
