“It’s really entirely deserted,” I added. “Even in daylight hours, we didn’t pass a single soul along the way.”
Challenger didn't answer for a moment. He was sizing up the path down, I guessed, although I somehow had the impression that he had not drawn his attention away from me. “Sounds dangerous,” he replied eventually.
“Oh, absolutely,” I agreed. “It’s a funny thing, though, isn't it? After a night like this, I find that one hardly feels afraid of anything.”
I again had the sense that Challenger was looking at me intently, as if I had said something quite strange. But naturally a man like him would grasp my meaning. He was, after all, a sailor; he could be no stranger to the wave of fearlessness, of reckless abandon, that sometimes comes in the wake of a close brush with death.
“Better lead the way, then,” Challenger said, giving a wry grin, and opened the gate to gesture me through.

On earth, the year is 2335. Arthur Hastings is captain of a Miranda-class science vessel, the USS Wordsworth. Felicity Lemon, his first officer, is 1/4 Vulcan (3/4 human) and is mainly responsible for drawing up duty rosters and assigning ship's systems to the various science teams aboard vessel. She runs the ship with such efficiency that it completely boggles Captain Hastings' mind sometimes.
Near the end of the second year of their five-year mission, Admiral Japp pays them an unexpected visit...And he brings this short, stout little ambassador with him. This ambassador looks very familiar to Captain Hastings, but he can't seem to place him, especially given how nervous he is about Admiral Japp's insistence that they give the ambassador their 'full and total cooperation during his visit'.
And it turns out that Ambassador Poirot--who used to be the head of Starfleet Security--is definitely investigating something...but he's being very secretive about it: He won't seem to tell Captain Hastings anything useful about the investigation.
And Captain Hastings' greatest fears are realised when Ambassador Poirot looks Captain Hastings in the eye and tells him, in a low voice:
"Hastings. Trust no one." -

Marie musste zweimal hinsehen. Sie träumte doch nicht etwa? Von den vielen Erzählungen der etwas Älteren, die sich noch erinnerten, als der See jede Nacht so hell erleuchtet gewesen war?Ein merkwürdiger Postbote taucht im kleinen Ort am See auf. Ein seit Jahren leer stehendes altes Bauernhaus wird angezündet. Eine alte Dame erleidet einen Herzanfall. Mitten in der Nacht leuchtet der See taghell. Marie entdeckt einen Zusammenhang zwischen diesen Ereignissen, der besonderen Geschichte des Ortes und der dunklen Vergangenheit eines seiner früheren Bewohner - und gerät prompt ins Kreuzfeuer von Ganoven.
