Summary
Hide couldn’t relate to the fear of ghouls. It was even more unbelievable to think of how scared people were of them when he had a perfectly lovely and tame one of his own.
Of course, Hide had a number of advantages in handling this one. Hide had already known Kaneki for over a decade. He had long established his bond of trust with him, and gained the ghoul’s own in return. He understood Kaneki inside and out, having memorised everything that made him the person he was, and everything that made him tick. Every need and every response. Training was barely necessary by that point, and Kaneki was already more than willing to give himself over to Hide.
---
Hide knows how to control the scene and allow for Kaneki to freely give in to the heightened needs and urges of his ghoul body.

Summary
Marude once asked Hide; “Why”? Why the ghoul? Why would Hide go so far for his friend? What was it about Kaneki Ken that Hide fell in love with in the first place? Why him?
Hide hadn’t stopped to really consider the why before until he had been left with only himself to pick apart.

Summary
Kaneki had never been somebody who carried himself with an air of natural joy.
Nature and nurture could battle it out all they liked for their percentage of the credit, but regardless of how their influence was distributed, the person existed all the same. It was pointless to contend with what-ifs or the different paths nurture could have taken; Kaneki was dealt the hand he got, and there were no reshuffles.
-
An exploration of the limits of what Hide can do in the face of Kaneki's difficult circumstances and tragedies. While existence in itself may not ever provide Kaneki with a dream state of happiness, Hide can still be there as Kaneki chooses to continue living.

As Hide regained his strength, he once again turned to his primary purpose.
Kaneki.

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that some days, Kaneki was his only reason for living.
-

Summary
Hide knew he was supposed to be Kaneki’s safe place when nowhere else was, a role he took seriously and dedicated himself towards from a young age. His ultimate goal was for Kaneki to always be at ease, and he would not do anything to disrupt that if it was in his power.
Because there was so little in his power.
When Kaneki was suffering, it was all Hide could do to try whatever he could to reach the one he loved most, no matter the cost. Because Kaneki was a part of himself.

Summary
Hide knows, maybe even before Kaneki does, maybe even before Hide understands what it means.
Hide lets Kaneki go, because he knows nobody else will.
It hurts. Hide knows that. But he also knows, it won’t hurt forever. Because Kaneki is the kind of person you can keep in your heart, but not in your life.
He has to accept that.

Summary
Hide gasped, his heart beating furiously in his ears. He struggled upright, head woozy as blood rushed back into all his organs. With a snap, his chest closed and the kagune slid harmlessly off him, only half the size it had been before. It shattered like glass when it hit the asphalt. Finally, he got his feet underneath him and stood, swaying for a moment. The pain of death and his last thoughts lingered for a second longer before disappearing.

Or, Hide discovers that he's quite bad at dying.

Summary
Hide's already died in a thousand times, in a thousand different ways, in a thousand different places, caused by a thousand different people, only to wake up on the same bed, in the same place, at the same time, looking up at the ceiling with a racing mind.
But, that’s okay.
Because, as he looks up into his eyes, filled with tears and sorrow and the sprouting seed of hope, all he can do is smile as bright as he can, and feel a blanket being lifted from his head, making him be able to breath and think in a clearer way than he could in a century.
And it’s okay.
Because, he knows as the laughter rises in the background and the knife travels across his neck leaving a numbing trail, that he’ll do all of this again, gladly, a thousand times over.
It’s okay, because it’s for him.
