Summary
Jon’s boyfriend was too thoughtful. It was a real problem.
That wasn’t to say that Jon was under the misapprehension that Martin was perfect - he was well aware of his flaws. He was stubborn, and a poor communicator, and the only person Jon knew whose pettiness rivaled his own. But all of these qualities were made up for (to the extent that they needed to be made up for - Martin’s pettiness was, in all honesty, something Jon greatly admired) by all the ways Martin cared. He cared so much, and he made it look effortless.
It was the little things. Cups of tea, sandwiches from the cafe down the street (cause I noticed you skipped lunch again), thick woolen socks (cause I know your feet always get cold at night), ceramic mugs with highland cows painted in the glaze (cause it reminded me of you). Jon wasn’t good at the little things, but he was determined to get better. So when Martin mentioned that he’d never been given flowers, he thrilled at the opportunity.

Jon, loopy on painkillers after getting his appendix out, is absolutely in awe when he sees Martin after waking up and discovers that they are married. Martin thinks it’s very sweet and funny.
Based on that video where that woman’s husband gets a procedure done and he’s all like “We’re married!? You're so pretty, you're the prettiest person I’ve ever seen, we’re married!?” when he sees her again after waking up.

“If the world were really ending…” Martin mused, “I mean, if we knew for certain it was going to, and there was nothing we could do to stop it… What would you be doing, right now?”
“I don’t know… I never really had a- a bucket list, or anything…” Jon sighed, thought it over. “I’d like to make things right with Tim,” he said eventually. “I- I tried, earlier, but he- he doesn’t want to speak to me.” If the world were really ending, he supposed, he could try again, but he didn’t think this was a thing that could be fixed in under a day. He wasn’t sure it was a thing that could be fixed at all. “What about you?” he asked.
“I don’t know either, really. I called my mum earlier, but she didn’t want to speak to me. I asked the people at the care home to give her a message, told her I loved her and all that. If the world doesn’t end, she’s going to be really confused.” He laughed weakly. “She’ll probably think I’m, I dunno, trying to guilt her for not answering the phone, but, well. It seemed like the thing to do.”
Yes, Jon thought. Telling people that you love them did seem like the thing to do, the night before the end of the world.

“Has a blind date ever gone well?” He asked as she washed glasses. Martin wasn’t disappointed. He hadn’t exactly been expecting much. He should have just told Tim to shove it.
The woman started racking the glasses over head and shook her head. “Hey, at least your one turned up. The guy in the corner has been on his own all night.” Martin pointedly did not turn his head to look, as much as he wanted to see who was having a worse night than him. The bartender smiled, “I’m Sophie by the way… cheer up duck, pretty thing like you can do so much better than that.”

“You really don’t like any poetry?” Martin asked one night as they lay curled on the couch together, a fire roaring in the hearth beside them.
“I didn’t say that!” Jon protested, “I said I don’t like most poetry. I just- I just don’t really see the point.”
Martin sputtered, voice going high-pitched with indignation. “The point? It’s art, Jon, the point is to make you feel things!”
“I know, I just think prose does that a lot more… cleanly.” Jon couldn’t exactly make out exactly what Martin muttered in response to that, but he thought he sensed the gist of it. “I’m sorry!” he said, though he was laughing.
“No, no, you can’t help it,” Martin conceded. “A poem either affects you or it doesn’t, it’s not something you can control. I’m going to find a poem that affects you, though!”
“I’ll save you some time and tell you that I’ve never liked Keats.”
Martin sighed. “I can’t believe I love you.”

Of course, Tim had suggested that they ‘combine income’ and get a joint let.
“You both like the place, and you are both more than capable of sharing the same space without killing each other, look it just makes sense” Tim, as ever, was right. He didn’t need to give Martin the loaded wink over the top of his Ray-bans, as he nudged Martin in the leg with his knee, for Martin to pick up on the not-so-subtle suggestion.
Jon, however, seemed oblivious, but had found the idea “practical, and economically viable.” Martin wasn’t sure he would ever get over watching Sasha practically choke on her cocktail olive as she tried to calm her laughter behind Jon’s back.
