She's haunted her family from her own reckless actions. Ayano stares at this girl she hardly knows, all things considered. Only one timeline with her, aside from the here and now. Otherwise, she has only been observing. “Did I haunt you?” She asks her.
“You're not special in that,” Mary whispers, “All of you haunt me.”
Ayano laughs, soft and barely there. Not appropriate, of course. But after timelines of this—of repeating her mistakes, only realizing what she's done when it's too late—”appropriate” gets lost.
“I didn't even leave a body,” Ayano says. “Kano—in the timelines I let him in—he had to pretend. Pretend he was me. That he was my body. Just sitting there, for hours, waiting for someone to find him. He knew, didn't he? More than anyone, he knew what it was like, to be me. He pretended to be me. My poor brother.”
“You're focusing on someone else again.”
She paused. “Maybe I am,” she agrees, a rueful smile, “It's what I'm used to.”
“Ayano.” Mary's eyes bore into her own. “You don't have to pretend with me. We're the same.”
Ayano's breath caught.
