Summary
After WWIV devastates the planet, all the countries on the continent of Asia come together to form the Eastern Commonwealth. The Commonwealth's first emperor, Sugiyama Akio begins a process known as the Selection to find a wife for himself and an empress for the people. One hundred years later, his third great-grandson Prince Kaito is preparing for his own. As the applications are sent out, New Beijing's Linh Cinder is persuaded to apply. When Cinder is chosen for the Selection, she must not only adjust to the completely unfamiliar world of luxury and aristocracy, but do her best to hide one shocking detail about herself: Cinder is a cyborg.
Meanwhile, cyborgs across the country grow increasingly exhausted and frustrated with the Cyborg Protection Act limiting their rights and freedoms as people. Protests and riots break out regularly across the country, but are particularly violent in the capital. The announcement of the Selection only further angers cyborgs, serving as a slap in the face during their fight for freedom. But when Linh Cinder is chosen for the Selection, rumors begin to spread about her humanity, or lack thereof.
