Methos was sprawled on his back, staring at the ceiling blankly. “I forget where I am, sometimes,” he said in that same tone.
Richie just shook his head, puzzled.
At last Methos turned his head, focusing on him. “You wondered why I keep a light on, back...whenever that was,” he said, gesturing at the little lamp “That’s why. In the dark, it’s harder to tell where I am. When I am.” He took a slow, careful breath, gazing back at the ceiling again “I have woken up in a lot of dark places I wouldn’t wish to revisit. There’s just...so much. ” He reached up, pressing his palm to his forehead “So many memories, they get...tangled, sometimes, when I first wake up. The light helps. Makes it easier to remember, to know where I am.”
Richie stared at him, startled by this revelation and honestly surprised that he’d never thought about that before. He certainly had the same experience from time to time, especially while traveling. He’d woken up disoriented and confused plenty of times, unsure of his surroundings, and he’d had occasions when it had been pretty alarming until he’d been able to remember where he was.
He tried to imagine compounding that by five thousand years.
Yeah, he thought, chilled. It made sense for Methos to sleep with a light on. He couldn’t imagine what it would be like, holding that much time in his head.
