Summary

Panic replaces suspicion, guilt replaces pride, and the team must face the truth—they broke the very partner who carried them.

Summary
“Peter frowns. “Are you alright?”
Neal takes a few deep breaths. “I’m, I’m fine.”
“If you aren’t feeling well, I can take you home.”
Neal shakes his head. “Let’s figure out who stole this Monet first.”
Peter frowns and reaches out to touch Neal’s forehead, as if checking for a fever. “Neal…”
“What?”
“We are investigating a stolen Degas. Not a Monet.”
Neal blinks slowly. “I know that. That’s what, that’s what I meant to say. to say. to say.”
Neal attempts to take a step towards Peter and stumbles. Peter quickly reaches out to catch him. “Neal? Neal? Answer me, please!”

Summary
Danny didn't really have a lot. He had his mom, and Ellen, and his color pencils, but he didn't really have much else.
That was fine though, he loved his color pencils! He only had seven. Red, blue, yellow, black, brown, pink, and white. But that was okay. He had enough to make it work.

Who was Neal?
Years and years of painting Van Goghs, Vermeers, and Delacroixs meant that he was incapable of painting a Neal.
Years of being Halden, Donnelly, Bonds, Caffrey.
Neal could barely even be classified as a person anymore, much less an artist.

Summary
“There’s a lot I haven’t told you, Matt. And I think there’s a lot you haven’t told me.”
Matthew smiles wistfully. “I suppose that’s how us criminals work, isn’t it?”
“I suppose,” Neal says. He leans forward and wiggles his hips around until he can comfortably rest his head on Matthew’s shoulder.
They stay like that for a few minutes, one of Matthew’s hands gently massaging Neal’s scalp and the other moving up and down his side and back. The touches are light and fleeting, gracing across Neal’s skin. His heartbeat is solid and steady in Neal’s ear and against his chest. It’s comfortable. Quiet. Neal likes being held like this.
Or, the one where the idiots confess but don't do anything about it, and then Neal decides it's time for Matthew to meet his family.

Summary
“Why’d you start?” he asks suddenly, Peter testing the waters earlier, now diving in head first. “Forgeries, cons, the whole shebang.”
Maybe it’s the lack of sleep, or the stuffy air in the car, maybe it’s just something vulnerable in him begging to be heard for the first time in years, but Neal finds himself answering honestly. Slowly, and carefully, but honestly.
When Peter asks about his past, Neal finds himself indulging.

Summary
He sits up and shoves the test in the pocket of his hoodie, then stands and shuffles towards the door. His hand rests on the handle for a moment before he pushes it open. The master bedroom is the door next to his at the end of the hallway, but the ten steps it takes to get there have never felt longer.
He knocks on the door with one hand. The noise is unbearably loud in the otherwise silent hallway. He winces and bites his lip. The door opens.
“Neal? What are you doing up?”

Or, Neal finds out he's pregnant. His dad is the first person he tells.

Summary
“You jumped,” he says quietly, sitting beside him on the couch, granting him the privacy of not looking. “Afterwards. You were afraid of me touching you.”
“I could have just been shot, Peter,” he excuses, taking the moment in between to down some water with the meds. He suddenly wants that ‘medicinal red wine’ he’d mentioned earlier. “You’d be pretty jumpy too.”
“I’ve seen it before,” he continues. “Your reaction. I see it in a lot of victims. Assault, abuse, the likes.”
“I’m not surprised.” He knows where this is going, but he can stall it.
“Just tell me,” Peter says quietly this time, still not catching Neal’s eye, but looking in his direction; his gaze lands on bandaged hands. “This isn’t the first time.”
or: Peter unlocks animalistic fears, driven by years in prison.

“It was Collins. I tried to run early on, ’n he clipped me in the leg.”
“Clipped you?” Peter mutters skeptically. “Neal, the way you’re limping, the trajectory must’ve been—”
Jesus. Peter Burke and his everlasting, immortal skepticism.
“I rushed him,” Neal lies. As he does, he hides his wince. This has to be one of the most poorly thought-out lies of his life. This could get him in deep shit. “I tried to take his gun, knock him out. He retaliated.”
Peter’s quiet. The plane rocks. Mild turbulence stirs Neal’s leg; he grits his teeth. The crystal blue out the window mocks him like a diamond he can’t swipe.
“Why are you lying?” Peter asks, at last.//
Peter finds out the specifics of Neal’s gunshot wound after Cape Verde.

BURKE: Where were you on the day of December twenty-third, two thousand six?
CAFFREY: Buyin’ a Christmas tree.

CAFFREY: Huh. That’s weird. I was gettin’ cash for the tree. Didn’t want Big Brother tracking my pine sales. Who knows, maybe I didn’t want my name associated with the lumber business? I hear it’s real bad for the climate these days—
BURKE: Do these or do these not show you entering the bank?
CAFFREY: [A pause—four seconds.] [Quietly] They do.//

The boy is sitting on a cracked bright yellow curb, curled over a notebook that’s planted in his lap. Scribbling. Messy curls falling into his eyes.

Summary
Danny stretched out as far as he could into the grass. “My mom cleans houses and she says that the ones who pay really well always have, like, a jug of water in the fridge. Not bottles or anything. Just a glass pitcher. Like for flowers.”
The redhead nodded. “And high ceilings! I think it’s so they can fit more balloons in when they throw parties.”
A girl scoffed. “That’s dumb.”
“I bet their clothes are really warm,” Danny said loudly. “And the minute their power gets shut off, they call the people right away to get it back on. And their shoes always fit, ‘cause if they don’t, then they just get new ones.” He dug his fingers into the dirt. “And there’s always food in the fridge and they all have pet dogs.”
Neal felt his own cheeks redden. It made his insides squirm, knowing that Peter and Diana and Jones were seeing all of this. He could just imagine them comparing the words the kid on the ground said with his present day behaviors, matching cause with effect like pairs of playing cards.
or, an artifact the team comes across sends them hurtling back into their own memories, and it's especially sensitive to Neal.
