Neil tiptoes out of the bedroom, bare feet silent on the cold, wood floor. He’s thrown a hoodie on in concession of the frost on the windows, but he still shivers slightly. The air is dry and sharp on his skin, scars aching as winter greedily wrings every last drop of moisture from it.
He flexes his fingers gingerly. He rolls his neck until he hears it crack.

The squirrel’s head cocked left, and then right. It chirped, each trill musical and blending into the next, but none of it coalesced into language for Andrew. Finally, the squirrel sighed--okay, the squirrel didn’t really sigh, because it was a squirrel, but there was something like surrender in the way it dropped its hand from Andrew’s nose, tugged Andrew’s thumb up, and then bit him firmly.

Andrew scoffed quietly to himself and set the phone on speaker to light his cigarette. Muffled, he said, “He better be eye candy if I’m coming to that dump.”
Andrew inhaled deep and closed his eyes for a moment before blowing the smoke out through his teeth. On the other end of the phone, just as he was bringing the cigarette back for another drag, he heard Wymack say, “Hey, my son wants to know if you’re cute.”
Andrew coughed up his lung at that surprise, but he didn’t miss the way that a distant voice piped up with “I want to say yes, sir.”

Summary
When Neil was fourteen, his father caught up to them in Seattle and he got separated from Mary. Unfortunately, neither of them escaped unscathed, but they did escape despite all the odds. They manage to reunite at one of their emergency rendezvous and take off running.
That's where their luck ran out though because they only made it to California before Mary's injuries finally bested her. In the end, his mother couldn't go on but she made Neil promise to keep running because one of them had to make it. With no other choice, Neil burned her body, buried her ashes on the beach, and did what he had promised.
Then, impossibly, things went from bad to worse — After a month of just sort of drifting in his grief, Neil found out he was pregnant.

Summary
It’s a community service event at some garden. Some publicity stunt the board wants them to do for good exposure – improving upon the team’s image, Andrew thinks, especially after the events of last year.
