It felt like some distant dream, the memory of staring at the sharp spike of his own bone slicing through his thigh, his knee bent in a direction it wasn’t supposed to go; of gushes of crimson blood pooling underneath him; of laying on his back on the ice, the shock of its cold surface the only thing keeping him conscious; of listening to Mila and 20,000 spectators scream in horror together; of staring up at the ceiling of the rink, wondering if it would be the last thing he saw.
Of feeling strangely at peace with the fact that it might be.
Three months later, though, he wished he could go back to that moment. Wished he could tell the medical personnel to slow down, come to him just a little bit later, let him bleed just a little bit more.
Dying on the ice would have been better than rotting away without it.

After a freak accident during a pair skate competition, Yuri Plisetsky is forced to take a year off to recover.

“What would…what would that look like?” Yuri asks in a small voice. Otabek's skin on their cheek feels impossibly soft. He cradles their face, and his eyes are so open and honest, and it tears Yuri’s heart into one million Otabek-shaped pieces.
Otabek runs his thumbs across their cheeks, the smallest smile gracing his features.
“Let me show you.”

It started a few years ago. Back in Barcelona, JJ had been running an errand to a store before the banquet to pick up something for Isabella when he saw a familiar figure. Yuri Plisetsky had been in the store buying a dress and makeup. Maybe the makeup could be explained by his skating and the exhibition skate tomorrow, but the dress didn't make any sense. For a moment, JJ considered saying something, but before he could, Yuri turned enough to see him. That was the first time he ever saw fear in the young man's eyes.
