“I loathe you,” Damian informs Tim in a flat voice. “I was forced to study your philosophical treatise for months before I was allowed to venture into the field at my father’s side, despite having demonstrated clear prowess in the martial and mystical arts. I was trained from infancy by the greatest tacticians of this millennium and yet I was informed, again and again, that I failed to live up to a standard set by you, a woman with no great pedigree, skill, or experience. Your existence has proven a burden even in your physical absence. You are correct, that you are disliked. But I am the only member of this family who does so.”
When Tim turns her wide-eyed stare onto him, Damian folds his arm across his chest and glowers at her. There’s some sort of pressure inside Tim’s rib cage. She couldn’t possibly name it, except maybe as hope, or relief. The only thing Tim can think to do is ask, “Is that why you tried to stab me in the hand with a caprese skewer at the Hammerstein-Schmidts’ breast cancer awareness fundraising picnic?”
From his greater height of two entire inches, Damian stares down his nose at Tim. “One day,” he intones darkly, “I will have my revenge.”
