Mingjue should have known something was wrong the minute Xichen walked in the door, but, to his credit, Xichen often came home rumpled and worse for wear. There wasn’t anything unusual about his flushed cheeks, his mussed hair, or the wrinkles in his expensive button-up shirt. But then, instead of meeting his eye, Xichen looked at the floor and fiddled with his keys, standing in the entryway of their home almost like he wasn’t sure he was ready to come in.
“Da-ge,” he said, halting in a way Xichen basically never was. “I should tell you something.”
