Summary
“What are you here for, then?”
The ranger grinned, startlingly white. “To kill a criminal.”
“You kill criminals, but y’ain’t a sheriff?”
“I’m a ranger, Texas Red. I only kill the ones who break the law without reason. And you got twenty reasons to explain to me. Nineteen, rather.”
The outlaw huffed a laugh. “Well, I reckon you’ll be waiting a good long while then, ranger. I only spill one secret per drink, and I ain’t got the money for twenty drinks today. Or the liver.”
“‘S fine, “ the ranger said, shrugging. “I’m a patient man. You know any farms that could use my help while I wait?”
The outlaw took a long, deep drink of his whiskey, tilting his head back as he emptied the last of it.
“You’re in luck,” he said, setting his glass down on the counter with a steady thunk. “My ranch ain’t much, but it’s more work than I’ve been feeling like doin’, lately. I could use a hand.”
