They’ve been warned about Ysgith. The locals whispered in vague, evasive terms, about a maleficent goddess prowling the swamps, a princess who died in terrifying agony and who let none who entered her domain leave with their lives and their minds intact.
Gascon doesn’t believe them. He’s not a superstitious man.

Summary
“Do you dance?” Queen Meve repeats curiously with a sip of her wine. Her eyes cut to him, assessing and faintly amused. “We have hosted near half a dozen of these balls since my coronation, and yet, I haven’t once seen you join th’ celebrations.”
No is the safe answer.
(No because Reynard has practiced restraint and he has it down to a fine art, because these balls are not for celebration, but for him to observe, to spot threats. The foolishness that once arose in him during celebrations was squashed when waiting for his execution.)
((No but if she asked, he might throw that restraint away in a single traitorous heartbeat.
No, only Reynard can't bring himself to lie.))
“Once,” Reynard admits. He thinks of his mother, a fragment of her hummed melody. Dance lessons, learning left foot, right foot, as any good noble boy should before he ever held a sword in his hand. Five or six and waltzing down the hall, laugher echoing after the patter of feet. The next lie comes easily to him. “I admit I lack the— ah— grace for it.”[Or: if only for one song, Meve asks him to dance. More often than not, Reynard says yes.]

Summary
"Half the sum of attraction, on either side, might have been enough, for he had nothing to do, and she had hardly anybody to love; but the encounter of such lavish recommendations could not fail. They were gradually acquainted, and when acquainted, rapidly and deeply in love." - Jane Austen, Persuasion
Meve and Reynard are drawn to each other almost from the moment they meet - and it's an attraction they are unable to deny. But bonds of marriage and loyalty quickly pull them apart, seemingly for good.
Can they ever find their way back to each other?
