He had the look of someone working very hard to stifle a grin, a sort of smooth, serene expression verging on blankness, which he had learnt in the diplomatic corps. Although both bride and groom were nearing forty, and it could not be said they were still in the flower of youth, their exuberance gave them an energetic, vital quality, and their happiness was contagious. The small party of assembled well-wishers found themselves grinning, too.
