„Thomas, wir machen eine Pause", mahnte Kocoum ihn eindringlich.
Doch Thomas achtete nicht auf ihn und schoss den nächsten Pfeil ab. Wieder knapp daneben.
Als er erneut das Gewicht von Kocoums Hand auf seiner Schulter spürte, fuhr er wütend zu ihm herum.„Ich schaffe das schon, Kocoum“, schnauzte er seinen Gefährten an. „Ich muss das schaffen.“
Kocoum stand eine Armlänge von ihm entfernt und sah ihn mit ausdrucksloser Miene an. Der strenge Zug in seinem Gesicht war verschwunden.
„Wieso?“
Es war nur ein Wort, doch das, was dahintersteckte, brachte Thomas aus der Fassung. Er gestikulierte wild mit dem Bogen in seiner linken Hand zu dem morschen Baum.
„Ein Mann ist kein Mann, wenn er nicht schießen kann“, erklärte er und spürte, wie ihm das Herz in der Brust hämmerte.
Ratcliffes Worte und die der anderen Männer der Schiffsbesatzung hallten in seinen Ohren wider, obwohl sie längst nicht mehr waren.
Du bist als Seemann untauglich. Und du bist ein sehr schlechter Soldat. Enttäusche mich nicht schon wieder.
Und nun hatte auch Kocoum begriffen, dass Thomas zu nichts zu gebrauchen war.

‘Thomas, we're taking a break,’ Kocoum warned him urgently.
But Thomas paid him no heed and shot the next arrow. Just missed again.
When he felt the weight of Kocoum's hand on his shoulder again, he wheeled round angrily.‘I can do this, Kocoum,’ he snapped at his companion. ‘I have to.’
Kocoum stood an arm's length away from him and looked at him with a blank expression. The stern expression on his face had disappeared.
‘Why?’
It was just one word, but what lay behind it upset Thomas. He gestured wildly at the rotten tree with the bow in his left hand.
‘A man isn't a man if he can't shoot,’ he declared, feeling his heart hammering in his chest.
Ratcliffe's words and those of the other men on the ship's crew echoed in his ears, although they were long gone.
You are unfit to be a sailor. And you are a very bad soldier. Don't disappoint me again.
And now Kocoum had also realised that Thomas was good for nothing.

Among Englishmen, Thomas has never felt like one of them. He's slighter than them, prettier than a man should be, and looks at men in a way he would never dare reveal. He never expected that he'd abandon the settlement of the New World and join an Indian tribe either, but meeting Kocoum made him believe that his life could be something different than he had ever imagined. Kocoum, with his strength, his kindness, and undying loyalty, it's no wonder Thomas falls desperately in love with him.
It's no surprise that that love between them could lead to something more, something beyond the boundaries of everything Thomas knows.
