THIS is why I so readily and passionately rise to Lan Qiren's defence, despite my lacking the confidence in my native language & customs to translate concepts I grew up with but did not know where CHINESE until I incidentally realised as much in my recreational studies. This story, exploring all that unsaid and left open by MXTX, is a very good portrait of the silence and secrecy between generations, of the traumas carried through generations, unspoken but FELT, especially when the emotions so unaddressed are so very much LOUDER than what is heard in raised voices, behind closed doors.
This story is, while certainly researched and at all turns endeavored to being Informed, still shy of the undercurrents that so reasonate with MXTX's intended audience (diasporic though I may be) but the depth of things Unspoken is well articulated, here (and certainly to better affectation than what my middling grasp on what-is-THIS and what-is-THAT can really articulate, in either language, in my mishmashings of both).
Lan Qiren is a character so very, VERY quintessentially "chinese": Yu-furen, too, is an archetype that rings more powerfully from within the chinese experience. While westerners can - accurately and legitimately - apply western terms and english-language faults & failings to these characters, the western understanding feels... shallow. This story, from Lan Qiren's POV, has done much to alleviate and SOOTHE that pervasive sense of [wrongness] that so irks me when I encounter westerner's opines of and ON Lan Qiren (and Madame Yu and Lan Xichen and Lan Zhan and Jiang Cheng and Wen Qing...) because... this writer? This writer GETS it, in many levels, where too many dismiss depth existing AT ALL (CQL-only fans seem most susceptible to missing nuance but the english translations available of MDZS do oft get lost as being amateur TRANSLATIONS, so painful subs only account for so much, y'know?).
I revisited the Kingdom Hearts fandom, between re-reading this fic series, and undoubtedly carried my grievances re: Lan Qiren as the western fandom perceives him with me: Master Yen Sid is ASTOUNDINGLY lost on KH's western fans, and the BBS characters in general fare similarly poorly (alongside DONALD DUCK, of all characters!). There are obvious differences between the MXTX & KH fandoms - demographic, region of origin, translation availability & quality, fandom age & aging, etc - but, like, going from one to the other was Rather Jarring whilst being UNCOMFORTABLY similar?
Personal meta aside, this is an EXCELLENT interpretation of the Lan Sect's recent history, and Lan Qiren's role within it, and rings very TRULY to those reading between all left (deliberately) unsaid in MXTX's novel.
