Despite what many may say, scenting is the most important aspect among the different subgenders. Everything else, from mating bites to knotting, feeds back into the ability to smell and scent others. Omegas will tend to have mild to strong scents, but in return, they also have stronger, more sensitive noses than the other subgenders. Alphas have the inverse, strong scents and somewhat weak noses. Betas, betas have both negatives. The idea is that an omega will find the perfect mate, preferably an alpha, with their nose, and the alpha's weak nose will be attuned to only them. It’s not all that researched, for a variety of reasons, but all this to say, an alpha should not have their nose attuned to a beta’s scent.

Sam was a ray of sunshine, Bucky had known that from the moment he interacted when his mind was back. Well, maybe not immediately. Bucky could remember Sam ‘following him’, following his every movement as he looked for Bucky. The first time he had run into Steve after having his mind back, it was like he had been doused in freezing cold water that made your skin ache. Bucky wasn’t the same as Steve remembered him, and it showed.
However, whenever he interacted with Sam, it was like the sun warming his aching body. Sam had no expectations of who he should be, what he was missing. Bucky loved Steve, don't get that wrong, but it was different, and he often felt like he was disappointing Steve by not being the same by being so broken and different.
After Steve had left, Bucky shut down, blocking everyone out and focusing on his therapy, which he hated more than anything else. Looking back, he regretted not answering Sam's texts. He would get the occasional selfie of Sam with something that reminded him of Bucky, or wanting to meet up and check on him. Sam never pushed, but he was consistent that even while Bucky was ignoring him, he knew Sam was there.

It wasn’t so much of a problem as it was just a…thing. As Sam said, not having sex wasn’t an issue for him–not at all. They could never have sex and Sam wouldn’t care, if that’s what Bucky wanted then he’d be celibate for the rest of his life.
He and Bucky had never actually talked about sex before; it just never came up. Sam had a sneaking suspicion that it was a tricky topic for Bucky; being a trans guy from the 1940s couldn’t have made it easy for him to talk about stuff relating to his body. Hell, Sam was from the modern era and that stuff was still difficult for him to talk about.
