I kind of wonder if part of the appeal of the SPN setting and sound to Kripke isn't that of a Midwestern boy with a chip on his shoulder about how the media landscape largely ignored his experience of growing up in the U.S. I can see this reflected in Dean's attitude to a number of things, such as his general dismissal of anything that we could call part of coastal/metropolitan culture. What struck me after last season though, was how rare it is for Sam and Dean to work on behalf of anyone from their own class

Summary
Mathias is chief of the tribal police force of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. He inherited his post when Malachi Strand was convicted of corruption and imprisoned. Mathias has fired Malachi's people, and replaced them with his own, but the problems that existed before have not gone away.
He has no problem off the reservation because he has no authority there, that is the responsibility of Walt Longmire, the county sheriff. Due to fiscal limitations of the BIA his powers are severely limited and allow him only to investigate misdemeanors on the reservation. He wants to do whatever he can to help his people, but his hands are tied and finds himself frustrated by his situation.
Someone new has come to Durant, someone who has grabbed Mathias' interest. An ex-FBI agent named Alia has some to town. Mathias has fallen for her, hard; not just for her beauty, but for her compassion and her understanding of the plight of the Cheyenne. He feels she's way beyond him, a doctor, and a veteran of the Palestinian refugee camps, but why does he get the feeling she might feel the same?

I see the first fist coming at me, feel my terror as it all goes out of control. I tried to get away, tried to claw and fight them off and they just went - mad. Then there is only pain, I'm down on the ground and they are stomping on my chest and stomach, kicking me, screaming Whore, Slut, Bitch. They spit on me before they leave me there, bleeding. I am nothing. Worthless.
