Caleb clicks his tongue.
She is right about one thing: He's the only one that should protect you. And a promise can only be kept by being around to uphold it tomorrow.
Looking back on it, growing up you don't recall a time in your life without Caleb. You could build a collection of things you share in this life you've made. Two of the same toothbrush holder, two high school diplomas, two military-grade uniforms, two test subject files. All of your memories come in sets of two: Yours and Caleb's.

“Of course I promise.”

You stare at the bone-chilling scene before you, your breath unwittingly held.
“I’m sorry.” It doesn’t sound sincere, and you avoid meeting his gaze. Cold fingers meet your chin, tilting it up, but you yank away before he’s able to direct you. “Pip-squeak. Can you look at me, please?”
You don’t respond — even if you wanted to answer him, you wouldn’t have the words.
“Hey.” Caleb shifts forward, but manages to keep his hands to himself. His voice is low, like he’s trying to soothe a cornered animal. Not apologetic; it's purposeful. “You’ve never broken a promise before. Please, don’t change that now.”
You can’t believe his audacity to be asking favors of you at a time like this. “What are you?”
When he replies, he sounds like the man he claims to be, but you know it’s not the man you once knew. “I’m still me. I’m still your Caleb.”
“For once, please don’t lie to me.”
The only reply he manages is a quiet, begrudgingly guilty sigh. -
