His gun wavers, and oh, this is when his hands begin to tremble, anxiety and worry and fear all bundled into one.
It is only decades of muscle memory that allows Yutang to flip the safety on his gun, to tuck it back into his holster, and then he is running, feet pounding over hard concrete, throwing himself across the distance between Zhan Zhao and himself.
He grabs Zhan Zhao in his embrace before he can even think it through, sheer relief wiping out any coherent thought beyond the knowledge that Zhan Zhao is safe, here and alive and warm, and then Yutang's lips are on Zhan Zhao's, and the world fades to the feeling of warm skin against his./OR/ the one where cat and mouse get together and just start making out there's no other plot here tbh

It’s not like Zhan Yao didn’t have emotions…he just didn’t like expressing them. He found emotions tiresome and cumbersome as they tended to cloud people’s judgement and as someone whose entire job was to have a clear mind to analyze and profile people, emotions tended to get in his way. So he just…didn’t express them. This was irritating to his partner, Bai Yutong, but he was used to that, as Bai Yutong was the more emotional one of the two. But there were days...and cases...where Zhan Yao was the one who ultimately lost his shit.

Of course, being extremely smart didn’t come without some…problems. Because of his intelligence, people liked to badmouth him and talk behind his back, which he wasn’t completely unused to; it happened all the time in high school, university, graduate school, and the police academy. To him they were just words, nothing more. And he learned that if he ignored said words and didn’t give them any power, they couldn’t hurt him.

Zhan Yao didn’t like cases that ended up in shoot outs. Someone always ended up hurt and majority of the time, it tended to be Bai Yutong. He didn’t know why, but Bai Yutong was like a fucking magnet for bullets, whether stray bullets or properly aimed bullets, he always seemed to get fucking hit. Not like he was any better, but he normally tended to get either slashed with knives or knocked unconscious, he had never been hit by a bullet before.
