Dad then turned to me and told me he left a note that should explain everything to me. After they left, I rushed downstairs to read the note. And get this… his big explanation letter was stuck to the fridge with a cookie monster magnet. All he wrote on it… Caroline’s fault. I’m Caroline, by the way. WHAT THE FUCK DID I DO TO HIM! Summary
In 2010, Késsia, a young woman from Guyana, is thrust into the "American Dream"—something she barely believes in, but her father insists on supporting. She ends up in a small, traditional, "conservative" town in the U.S. for the next three years of high school. What she thought would be an inspiring experience quickly turns into chaos, full of clichés.
Her new school is a battlefield of stereotypes, people who think diversity is a trend, and teenagers who treat bullying like a sport. Késsia just wants to graduate without being consumed by this mess, but it seems impossible until she meets two other "immigrants" from suburban hell.
First, there's the Black boy who's just trying to escape this rural "paradise" and find a scholarship. Then, there's the opportunistic Arab boy, whose grandparents fled war for a better life but who’s more interested in profiting off others’ ignorance than studying.
Surrounded by ignorant teachers, unbearable classmates, and a town that doesn’t grasp "diversity," the three of them must survive while dodging societal clichés and trying to find themselves in a world of alienation—because in the end, all they’ll find in this town is hell.
