Shannon nodded, but her eyes betrayed her worry. Joseph could see the fear lurking in their depths, and it tore at his heart. He wanted to reassure her, to tell her that everything would be okay, but he knew that he couldn't promise that.
Instead, he pulled her into a tight hug, holding her close as the wind howled outside. "Keep watch on everything for me," he whispered, his lips against her ear. "And I'll bring back all the supplies we need. Just stay safe and warm in here, and I'll take care of everything else."
Shannon nodded, her arms wrapping tightly around him. "I'll be here, waiting for you," she said, her voice muffled against his chest.
