“Ashton’s such a shit,” Luke says, shutting the washing machine and hitting the start button. He turns with his arms folded across his chest. Calum’s watching him curiously. “You were the star of the show,” Luke says uncomfortably. “That’d be like seeing a concert and then trying to get the lead singer’s number at the meet and greet.”
“I strongly disagree with that comparison,” Calum says, “but I see where you’re coming from. However, counterpoint: I’m clearly not a big deal since I am currently standing here waiting for someone’s laundry to be done. Do you think footie stars have to wait for other people’s laundry?”

Everything is ready.
Luke has watched Ashton lose his head the last few months trying to get everything sorted — filling out forms, renewing his passport, applying for a visa, enrolling in courses — but there’s nothing left. They’re at the airport, Ashton decked out in luggage and dressed for a bitterly cold New York, and until he lands, there’s absolutely nothing more for him to do. The visa came through; his passport is in the clear; he has a fully-scheduled courseload and even a dorm room waiting for him at NYU.
Everything is ready for Ashton to leave. Everything except Luke.

But it's not anyone else. It's Michael. And the thing with Michael that Luke learned a long time ago is that you have to carve out moments with him and clench them in your fist or you'll find yourself fading from his life.

Calum always had trouble knowing what a normal amount of time was to look at another person, so when his brain kicked back into gear, he quickly dropped his gaze to his shoes, realized that was probably too obvious, and then darted his eyes around the aisle until he settled on staring intently at the rows of paintbrushes sticking up in front of him. Luke was lucky to be able to stick in Ashton’s orbit through his first year. So how was he supposed to say no when the object of his affection tossed him the idea of being friends with benefits in his second?
”We’re both single, we know we’re compatible as friends, what harm could it do? Just a way to blow off steam,” Ashton had said one late night in his room with Luke sitting comfortably in his bed at the beginning of the fall semester.
