The necklace is always right there, perpetually over their robes or tucked under their pilgrimage shirts; Faulkner's never seen them without it, not once. Dozens of times, he thought that they must've left it behind, only to squint and discover the thin, transparent fishing line solidly on the back of their neck. Omnipresent. Easy to get distracted by—Rane’s otherwise so unadorned that the twine and hook stand out, the silver stark against their skin when it would vanish against any other. The fishing hook is just the right size, too, the bend of it damn near designed for his fingers. It would be such a simple thing to rest them there and pull. Faulkner wouldn't even have to pull that hard, or pull down all that much—they're only an inch or two taller than him. It would be a little movement, a grab and then a twitch. All it would take. A grab and twitch and Rane, right where he wants them.
