The survivors return to Earth, where staying away from Kepler proves harder than Jacobi thought.

Jacobi took a shaky breath, his hands resting on Kepler’s now bare chest. “Yeah, just… can we— can we pretend like this is the first time?”
Kepler kissed behind his ear and swayed with him for a moment. “I would like that.
“What would you have said to me if you really had wanted to take me home in that bar when we met?” Jacobi murmured, hooking his fingers into Kepler’s waistband. “What would you have done?”
“Ah. Well I wouldn’t have taken you home from that bar on that day. It was 3pm and you were very drunk.”
“Okay, a different bar. Any bar.”
Kepler frowned slightly. “I don’t want you to be a stranger; I want you to be–... We can still make this the first time that counts.”AKA after the events of The Channel Fades to Snow, they figure out how to be together again.

Kepler gasps, squirming under the scrutiny, and Maxwell is a little breathless when she says, “What do you think, sir? Do you deserve a reward?”Naps in the office can be dangerous, Kepler realizes, because his subconscious has some rather alarming fantasies to throw at him. AKA I love giving Kepler sex dreams, it's the best.

He obeys. Pain flares in his leg, but it doesn’t matter.

“Hmm, this?” He adds a little pressure to where he’s idly rubbing the inseam of Kepler’s pants, about halfway up his thigh. “Oh, nothing. Just passing the time. Unless you'd prefer a game…?”
He trails his fingers higher, and pulls them back. Kepler shifts almost imperceptibly.
“No… distractions.”
“Pfffft, like having you pester me with a billion silly questions isn’t way more distracting than th-”
Kepler clears his throat. Jacobi rolls his eyes at him and, very deliberately, puts his hand back.Jacobi gets creative to pass the time on a boring stakeout.

Jacobi has always known, in the abstract sense, that sometimes Kepler sleeps with people for work. Honeypot missions aren’t the most common, but they happen, and it’s not a secret when it does. It’s just a part of the job, same as the corporate espionage, B&E, stealing, destruction of valuable property, and killing is, and he doesn’t raise an eyebrow at any of those. So he’s fine with it. In theory.
In practice? Well. That’s a different story, it turns out.Jacobi listens in to Kepler seducing a guy for work. He doesn't like it one bit.

Fireworks. That was how it felt when their fingers brushed. Jacobi had spent so much of the past year scolding his racing heart; he’s your boss for god’s sake (no, don’t think about how hot that is, behave, Daniel). It couldn’t work out, and he shouldn’t try. But after tonight…Jacobi may not have had a lot of relationship success in the past, but there was no way he was mistaking the way Kepler looked at him.
They had watched the fireworks on the hood of Kepler’s car, the weather just cold enough so that Jacobi could exaggerate a shiver and huddle up next to him. And Kepler had said 'rule number eight' for what must’ve been the tenth time that night, but he wrapped a warm arm around Jacobi all the same.
AKA Kepler takes Jacobi home after their fireworks anniversary.
