Summary
“Jesus Christ,” Joaquin announced his entrance, catching sight of Bucky’s back at the same time as Sam.
It looked like someone had taken a knife and meticulously flayed him open, but the bloodstained bullwhip carelessly tossed into the opposite corner of the room told a different story.
There were countless gouges and gashes crisscrossing all across his back, a few of them clotted off, most of them still sluggishly oozing blood, and all of them an angry, inflamed red. The jagged maze left Sam and Joaquin frozen in their tracks.

Bucky was on edge… Well, more so than usual.
Slipping back into the role of the Winter Soldier, following Zemo’s Russian commands, attacking those thugs at the bar, and worst of all, standing by as he was essentially sold off for information…
All of these instances and more were really starting to take their toll on his already fragile mental state. He was a lot more shaken up about everything than he cared to let on, and now, his brain was interpreting every little thing as an imminent threat.
Good thing Sam was there to help make him feel safe again.

Bucky looked incredibly jumpy. Not jumpy like I’m-gonna-try-and-kill-you-again jumpy. Jumpy like on-something jumpy. Jumpy like just-coming-off-something jumpy.
Steve knew the look. He’d seen it plenty of times before. Washington D.C. was rampant with people suffering from different substance abuse disorders. So was New York. So was any village, town, or city in the nation if a person knew where to look.
When Bucky stumbles into Avengers Tower after the events of CA: TWS, Steve helps him through withdrawal from the numerous drugs Hydra had been pumping into him.

Summary
As evil as Steve felt for thinking it, to him, an injured civilian or teammate was no longer one of the worst possible outcomes on a mission. Ever since he’d found out Bucky was alive, the worst case scenario was, and always would be, an injured Bucky. And boy, was Bucky injured.
His right lower leg had been ensnared in a bear trap.
The trap had easily pierced deep into the flesh of Bucky’s calf, cutting through it like butter. Blood was steadily dripping, oozing, and spurting from the various veins and arteries that had gotten nicked. The muscle and surrounding sinew were being shredded by the trap amid Bucky’s constant thrashing. Most sickening of all were the white shards of broken bone peeking through the wound.
Steve wanted nothing more than to look away, to run away from the twisted, mangled, gnarled mess that was Bucky’s leg, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t leave Bucky.

After the Asset pulled Steve from the river, he didn’t know what he was supposed to do. He didn’t have orders, and he didn’t have a mission. He was on the run from the law, and he was on the run from whoever remained of HYDRA. He couldn’t face Steve, and he couldn’t face himself.
A few weeks passed with him barely hanging on, and it seemed that no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t seem to do anything right. To him, life didn’t even seem to be worth living anymore…
And then he rescued Alpine, or rather, Alpine rescued him.

Bucky… was a lot to handle. He knew that. He owned it. However, when it came to receiving medical treatment, he was often too much to handle. Given his line of work, that posed a serious problem. They’d done this dance enough times to know that Steve being present for the treatment and acting as moral support just wasn’t enough. Restraints wouldn’t work either, as they had no access to materials strong enough to keep Bucky down. There was only one real solution left: drugs.
