Goodness.
Why do people strive to be good?
Is it because they wish to be good for goodness’ sake alone?
Or, are they only good because they fear the punishment that might come as a result of acting otherwise?
Moreover, if done out of fear, are those individuals truly good, or are they just pretending in order to protect themselves from recompense?
It is too early to say with certainty, but it does make one wonder what would happen if an individual who'd been subjected to such rules was suddenly shed of them and allowed to do as they pleased without care.
For example, if a subject(s) were placed into a situation where the concept of morality no longer applied, how would they behave in the face of this new information? What would happen, then? Would they attempt to retain their previous behavior held in conjunction with what was considered to be ‘ethical’ and have that helm their decisions, or would they seek out new pathways previously thought outside their reach and pursue their darkest desires without fear?
For, as is commonly known, anyone can be a good person if they just try.
Conversely, however…
Anyone can be a bad person if they’re not careful.
