Summary
After discovering who set the cabin on fire, Lottie becomes consumed with a grander project to interpret the Wilderness' will that centers on the Yellowjackets' dead team captain.
“I should be the leader. It should be me,” Shauna said.
“But it’s not,” Jackie said, rounding on Shauna and narrowing her large eyes. “Why do you think that is?”
“I don’t know,” Shauna said, shaking her head and looking at the ground.
“It’s because they’re ungrateful,” Jackie whispered, punctuating the last word with a sharp nod as she stepped closer to Shauna.
“No–they’re just… Lottie has them all under like, a spell or something. You should have seen them before I… before I passed out…” Shauna shook her head sharply.
“Why do you even want to be their leader? Remember what you d–remember what they did to me?” Jackie stuttered. “They would turn on you, too. You don’t want it, Shauna. You don’t want to be their leader,” Jackie’s voice was lowering to a whisper.
“You think they’re… ungrateful?” She asked. Strands of Jackie’s hair were frozen in stiff clumps, but the snowflakes that landed on her disappeared instantly.
“They are,” she said. “We don’t need them. You don’t need them.” Jackie said. -

Shauna tightened her grip on Jackie, frozen after Shauna had kicked her out, pulling her directly against her protruding stomach, a baby she didn’t want from a boy she hated more than liked. Something roiled and twisted within her, as she began her vigil over Jackie.

Summary
Directionless after flaming out of grad school, drinking herself to death alone in a squalid apartment, obsessed with someone who died almost a decade ago, 27-year-old Shauna Shipman is long past the point of hoping her life will get better. It doesn't help that one of her only friends, who she hasn't even seen in months, just dove headfirst off a hotel balcony. According to Nat, she was spouting some nonsense about "coming back soon"—but if there's one thing Shauna knows for sure, it's that dead people stay dead. Lottie's as gone as Jackie is, as gone as the rest of them, and she won't be coming back, not soon, not ever. Obviously.
(Asleep on the floor of the cabin as the first snow started to fall, Lottie made a bargain with the wilderness. Years later, confined in the mountains of Switzerland, months of isolation and electroshock unearthed something in her mind - not a figment of her imagination, but not quite a memory either. She's pretty sure she knows what happens next.)
