Summary

That was the benefit of being the firstborn son. Unlike his cousins, all three of them older than him, he couldn't be sold off to the highest bidder, married off like a broodmare, name and life stripped away as if they meant nothing. No, as the next heir to the family, the firstborn scion, Sirius was protected. He didn't understand it, not as a young boy, and not once in any real capacity before he was banished, but the protective shield kept him safe regardless.
He could be punished—berated, starved, and tortured with invisible magic—but he could not be fundamentally changed, he could not be turned into something he was not.
Regulus wasn't so lucky.
