“Me?” Edwin asks, almost affronted.
“Well, there’s no way you want me anymore, is there?” Charles blurts. Then he looks mortified.
Or, Edwin has known Charles to be transsexual since '89. It is only when Charles is cursed to experience one of his worst fears that they talk about it.

“If you’re a time traveller,” Hopeless asked, “when did you come from?”
Hopeless had moved nearer to Larrikin, who had not really sobered, and was still looking excessively happy with himself for no particular reason.
“I … two thousand and seventeen,” Valkyrie said, and then she looked at Skulduggery, “help me up.”
The skeleton took a moment to move, and then he extended a hand and supported her arms so she could stand. There was an overwhelming lack of familiarity in his behaviour.
“Alright,” Dexter said, “So that’s how you know Skulduggery.”
Valkyrie frowned, “I didn’t expect you to take that so well.”
“Well,” Larrikin said from the floor, where Dexter had dropped him sometime during his laughing fit. “You’re not the first.”
Or, Valkyrie travels back in time and meets the Dead Men. She finds them very different to what she expected.

Summary
Light flares up from the book, white and blinding. When she blinks away the spots from her vision the room is gone. The book is gone.
Dim green light casts a sickly pall down a long, decrepit looking hallway. She takes a breath and nearly chokes on the smell of dust and rot and something else, sharp and unnatural, like ozone. The light doesn’t seem to be coming from anywhere in particular. It gives the place an eerie unreality. It makes her skin crawl.

Then, he sees it: a long thread of gold extending from Edwin’s chest, looping through the air like a rivulet of sand. His own spectral form sprouts an identical one, stretching from below his sternum.
“Pretty,” Charles says, twirling his finger around the strand. “Is this supposed to happen?”
Edwin points towards their outlines. “Charles—“
His statement is cut off by a loud, raucous bark, startling them both.
