Summary
Surprisingly, Ellie’s job at a fast-food restaurant wasn’t the shittiest part about her nineteen-year-old life.
Granted, it was still pretty shitty. But compared to her dodgy apartment, which for whatever reason costed an arm and a leg in rent a month, and that both her parents were dead and she’d been moving in and out of foster care until she’d finally turned eighteen, her job at KFC was a minor dissatisfaction.
None of her foster families had ever connected with her emotionally, or even really tried to. Ellie could admit that she caused trouble occasionally, and wasn’t the easiest child to raise, but a bit of familial love couldn’t have been too much of an ask for any child, right?
AKA: Ellie hates everyone at her job except for a certain regular, who has a liking for flannel shirts and has a strange sadness about him, who comes in and orders the same thing every day.

What Ellie finds upon turning her head is not what she expected. Lingering next to Joel, atop the armrest of the couch, is a girl. Her hair is frizzy and controlled, kinky and coiled and no less beautiful than the rest of her. Her skin bears no filth, not like the dirt that’s accumulated all over Ellie’s. Her lips are large, her face full, like she’s been receiving full rations from the day she was born. There’s scorn in her eyes as her fingers trace over the broken watch on Joel’s wrist.
Ellie opens her mouth to ask about who in the hell she is when she notices the bloodstains on the girls’ violet shirt.
She then notices the inhuman translucency of her skin.
She then notices the way part of the girls’ leg phases through the couch.
Oh.
(TLDR: ellie can see ghosts. she can see sarah. it changes everything-- and nothing-- about her journey with joel.)
