In Drywind, being sentenced to death meant having to go through the Bloody Pass and become prey to the monsters living on the other side.
Even when you were innocent of the crime you had been accused of. Creatures made for violence and death killed guilty and innocent alike, after all.
So when a massive red wolf found you in the woods on the other side of the fence, you knew your fate was sealed.

Summary
Dying was not a pleasant experience, but at least in your case, it had been quick.
Getting to be reincarnated in your favourite piece of fiction, however, was a pretty amazing surprise. Doubly so when you were reborn in a peaceful but incredible kingdom, as the only child of a loving family, and in time to interact with the plot and hopefully meet all your favourite characters.
Really, everything was going well in your new life. A bit too well, perhaps.
You should probably have guessed it was not going to last.

The World Government has worked hard to obfuscate an interesting fact about Zoan Devil Fruits since the Void Century. In order for a Zoan Devil Fruit to be awakened, the Zoan user must find and claim their mate in accordance with their nature.
Zoan fruit users are driven to find their mates, seeking someone to fill the gnawing need within them, even if they don't recognize it themselves.

Summary
If someone had told me a year ago that I was going to be dropped into the world of One Piece, I would have eagerly shouted “Hell yeah! Bring it on,” like any average watcher of the show. I mean, think about it. The world was filled with promises of adventure and being the huge nerd that I was, and still am to this day, the thought of having cool powers and being surrounded by an awesome cast of characters was nothing short of a dream come true.
If someone had told me that I was going to be dropped into the world of One Piece 23 years prior to canon though…I would have hesitated.
But hey! At least seeing Mihawk in person makes up for some of it.
