Dick lets out a shaky whimper, unable to look away from the expanse of emptiness, curling further into himself, “Lonely.”
Bruce has been close to the surface for as long as he can remember, chasing the open air of something unreachable. He can no longer tell where his grief begins and where it ends, or where the sky begins and the water ends. You can always go up higher. You can always go lower. It's difficult finding the middle ground.
Bruce leans closer to the child, tail wrapping around them both and pulling him closer, the water chilling and undisturbed around them, “It was rather lonely down here too, until you arrived.”
(Bruce comes to find that raising a merchild is hard work.)
