While visiting his father in New York, fourteen-year-old Nigel Banyai risks his life to save a sweet-faced boy in the park. A kind and refreshingly honest young boy named Adam who reminds him of painted Renaissance cherubs, and of his secret soft spot for cracked porcelain on cold tile floors that he only allowed himself to put back together now in his photography.
He can’t even blame Adam’s handler as he pulls the kid away from him that day—bitter accusations hot on his breath— for seeing nothing more than crude tattoos etched into scarred skin, scabbed knuckles reopened and bleeding onto torn clothing, and sanguine-colored eyes squinted angrily over snarling lips.
