Summary
As Jon Arryn dies and Westeros descends into flames an exiled knight Jack Reatloss claws his way back into Westeros’s wars and politics. Determined the help his foster family, he becomes a trusted, if expendable, commander in Tywin Lannister’s grand strategy. He tries his best and yet will that be enough to save the Lannisters from tearing themselves apart.
Excerpt from the first chapter:
Jack brought the letter to his eyes again, his breath catching in his throat. He read it one final time, desperate to confirm the message.
Finally, Gyghn could bear the anticipation no longer. “What is written in that letter?” he demanded, his voice sharp, cutting through the thick air.
Jack stared at him for a long moment, the Magister’s features swimming before Jack’s focus sharpened with a terrifying, crystalline clarity. “Jon Arryn is dead,” he said. “I am to return immediately.” Before the Magister could open his mouth to dig deeper, to demand or dissect, Jack added, “With your leave.” It was not a request. He offered a shallow, perfunctory bow and turned on his heel, striding from the solar without waiting for a dismissal.
