“You can walk away from this story, because you weren’t there,” Jason tells her months later, nails deep in his own palms. He’s reliving his death again and again, mind deep in green wrathful waters.
But from the moment she first saw him, she was only getting to it closer and closer. Mothers don’t have an easy way out of their children's pain. And when she stood in that alley, and a strange boy got in between one of the League’s assassins and her, foolishly trying to protect someone much deadlier than himself, it was already decided.
She stared at the inconspicuous figure in front of her. Wet, curly hair sticking to the forehead, a white shirt hanging from the protruding, skinny shoulders. Unmoving. Vigilant.
She extended her hand in his direction, not expecting the decisive grab of warm, rough fingers.
Sometimes fate has other ways than tragedies.
This is one of them, she presumes.
