He had all but accomplished his goal by the time he entered his Junior year. It was the man with the owl-eyed glasses whom I had found marveling over Gatsby’s books. I don’t know how he knew about the funeral or even his name. The funeral was a quick affair, and as we struggled back through the rain, Owl Eyes let a hand fall on my shoulder for a moment. It seemed for a moment that we had connected and he understood. Everyone who really loved Gatsby had come, and everyone else stayed home."
Or: an alternate ending to Chapter 9 where Nick reveals that the book is his very long suicide note after falling in love with and subsequently losing Jay Gatsby.
