Ok folks we know Gwen did Upstead and Halstead fans dirty. She mentioned in interviews that she sees Jay and Hailey's paths crossing again sometime down the line.
So here is my take, inspired by many other fanfics that used this hook to explain Jay Halstead's seemingly strange disappearance. We know that something integral was missing from how things went down on seasons 10 and 11 on Chicago PD - that something was the core of what made Jay Halstead mean something so profound to his team, to his wife, and to us the fans.
So let's fix this mess in an honest and brutal way, shall we?

Hailey moved to DC and embarked on a successful career with the DEA in Northern Virginia. She built a new and stable life for herself. This story takes us into Hailey's world 5 years later after leaving Chicago in Season 11.What does it mean to unsuccessfully bury an unrequited dream? What does it mean to face the ramifications of possibly fulfilling it?

Summary
Jay vanished without a trace. He was missing for months. His absence has torn a hole right through the heart of Chicago. 15 years from where we left off in, Can’t Bend it Like Voight, Jay’s life was rich, full, and truly happy. He carried baggage a lot of it… military PTSD, trauma from his deployment and captivity in South America, and the scars from his time in prison… but more or less he learned to live manage triggers and not let them overwhelm his day-to-day life. Dr. Perry- his long-time therapist and confidant- retired 2 years prior. That was tough on Jay. He had tried another therapist, but it wasn’t the same. The joy of his family and professional life continued to pull him through.
Hailey had found more joy and purpose in her family life than she ever thought possible. The older she become the more she shed her scarred skins from her childhood.
What happens when something from his past rears its head in ways no one saw coming?
Super helpful to read Home and Can't Bend it Like Voight to really appreciate this story. Final chapter of the trilogy.

How I wish PD wrote the second half of season 10. I miss #upstead so much!
Aftermath of Jay leaving for Bolivia a few months later. Hailey has to grapple with her conflicting feelings of love, sadness, anger, and betrayal all while managing with what Jay left behind for her. Jay has to grapple with the consequences of his choices too.
