Okay, maybe not those last two.
Maybe if Trilla keeps making light of it in her mind, she won't have to face her own darkness.

She turns and faces him, ready to defend her actions if necessary. But instead, he salutes, and the rest of the men follow suit.

She smiles, returning the salute.
She releases the pressure seal on the latch.
She opens it.
A fairly heavily AU (pre-)Reaper War fic where the asari made contact with humanity in the late 21st century, after a classified military spaceflight test goes awry. But it's really a story about CPTSD, self-acceptance, and breaking down the walls we put up between ourselves and others to keep us safe and hidden. And also smut.
A lot of the trans/dysphoria stuff comes from my own experiences as a trans woman. Writing about it is kind of cathartic for me. Also there's a transmasc asari.

Summary
Yup, I went super AU with this one. It's another “the asari make first contact with humans first” fic but this time set in the 1950s, and technically a prequel to Reflections on the Razor's Edge. It'll be somewhat of a slow burn at first, but there will definitely be a steamy romance between Col. Jane Shepard and Liara T'Soni (despite the almost immediate thirst aplenty between them, who am I kidding, they're soul mates). I was sort of inspired by another Mass Effect fic on AO3 by drabbles (https://archiveofourown.to/works/23786239) that was based on the movie Arrival (2016) and it was really just super brilliant, but appears to have been sadly discontinued. I guess I wanted to retell it, and put my own spin and interpretation on it.
Some of the asari language terms, and also certain references to asari culture and biology, are derived from the amazing work of alephthirteen, another author here.
Also, again since this is very heavily AU, in this telling and at this point in history, women have long been equal in the structure of the US military and so we will be seeing some high-ranking female officers like Jane Shepard. Other than that, not much is changed in the culture of the 1950s.

The story of Commander Beverly Shepard, a Project Valkyrie veteran, and Dr. Liara T'Soni - Shepard's own Valkyrie, an angel of the battlefield. A story of covert operations and clandestine secrets; but also of galactic diplomacy, bonds between individuals and across species that are forged through combat and sacrifice, and above all, love. For love will have its sacrifices. As well, certain of events surrounding Shepard and Liara, and those happenings that enabled them to one day meet, shall be elaborated upon.
Mass Effect AU; somewhat canon compliant even though certain events will play out differently, and some entries will contain crossovers with other series. Also, much of the asari lore is significantly derived from the fanon lore of Daia's Asari Wiki and that developed by fellow AO3 author alephthirteen, though there are many aspects that are of my own invention as well.

“Cere killed them.” Trilla cut him off. In a way, they were cruelly fortunate that Seekers did not have a full battalion under their command, it had meant less troopers to betray them in the end.
Cal barely seemed shocked. “Mine didn't get their chips out in time either,” he frowned, faltering in his tracks for a few moments before hauling himself up onto the next ledge.
Trilla already knew that. They'd lost a lot of Jedi, almost too many to name, but even she'd heard that they'd lost Jaro Tapal to his battalion - and recovered his tiny padawan from the scrap heaps of Bracca.
No one had expected Cordova to train another padawan, but he had taken a chance on Cal when his world had been shattered. What survived of the Jedi Order had been recovering from Palpatine's half-quashed plan for almost a decade now, and Cal had been too, until his second Master disappeared.
With a newly knighted Trilla left to supervise him, they set out to find Cordova together and find someone else along the way.

(Or: The Second Sister captures Cal on Bracca, and Cal Kestis cements his place in the history books as the worst Inquisitor to ever do it. He keeps helping the rebels, and befriending droids. It’s embarrassing, really.)
