Ann watches in stunned silence as the photographers gush over her, praising not just the hair but the outfit Mika threw together today, a pretty red number that is quite different from her usual blues and other cool tones, and even her makeup, which to Ann’s eye doesn’t look any different from usual, but hey. What does she know? She knew what was happening the moment she arrived and saw Mika’s hairstyle, but as she gawks, the other woman turns, brown eyes creasing at the edges with a tiny, knowing smirk. Then she’s back to the photographers, beaming like nothing happened.
“Akira,” Ann says, finally, at a loss. “I’m not crazy, right? She’s totally…”
Akira cups his chin in his hand and confirms, “She’s definitely copying you.” One of his eyebrows raises and he adds, “She looks pretty good in red.”
And she does, is the thing.

Harrowhark finally looked up again. There was a strange glint in her eye. Something glittered that portended a certifiable Nonagesimus kind of nasty that Gideon didn’t want to touch with a twelve foot pole.
“Porkchops,” she said at last. “Ground beef. Bratwurst. Red meats, ideally.”“Feeling carnivorous, are we?” Gideon joked. Harrow did not deign to dignify this with a response.

Spoilers I empathize with every single character so deeply. How it feels to be human improperly, to be a burden or something pretending to be something else and everyone can tell. -someone’s comment that is so true abt this fic.
Felt solidly in the world of some backwoods NZ’s Māori community, and I love magical realism.
-really well done horror set up and idea, wish the themes were more incorporated through horror like hereditary, and as such the alecto ending felt weak to me. Just her leaving when Gideon finally has catharsis after staying for Gideon while she was still in suicidal pain. I get the metaphor of it, but I was really hoping for a fic where people’s issues could be represented by the happenings of an Eldritch horror. Like maybe harrow was secretly feeding her parts of Gideon or something and has to give lady up, or something, to represent the way she took Gideon for granted.
Instead, Alecto is more a solidly the type of complex metaphor you’d see in a drama. Parallels to the emotional drama of the fic, but otherwise not impactfully dramatic. Just another way Harrow annoys her, which is funny in a “Gideon treating an eldritch beast as just another way her roommate is inconsiderate” type of way, but it is anticlimactically real at least.
That said, the drama is really good. Subtle but gets the point across, creating a wonderfully complex relationship between Harrow and Gideon. When Harrow begins opening up after seeing how down Gideon has been, after all that description about how much Gideon wishes Harrow would give her more for her efforts, I was surprised by how lukewarm she reacted to it, but the complex emotions of “you only tell yourself Im too complex so you don’t have to try” and her thinking about how woeful Harrow’s attempts were makes the lukewarm reaction make sense. I know harrow had been acting terribly, but I got so used to her personality that I was always qualifying for her, so it was weird to see Gideon lash out at her for them, but it makes sense. Subtle but gets the point across.
Again, it’s much like a literary novel more than horror.
