With a scream, Alana began to run down the path. She had always been tall and strong for her age, but it was a long way and she tired quickly. As soon as she got her breath back, though, she started running again. She was sobbing and calling for her parents, but was almost unaware of doing so; all her conscious focus was on getting down to the valley floor and then finding her mother.
By the time she did, most of the village was on fire.
The only people she could see were bodies. No one living still walked the streets. Alana ran into the village and saw to her horror that her own lodge was one of the ones on fire. “Mama!” she cried, running toward it, but the heat drove her back. “Papa!” No one answered her. All she heard was the roar of the flames. She dropped to her knees, bent forward, hands on the dirt, and sobbed and sobbed and sobbed.
And then she realized.
She had done this.
She had gone into the Metal World, a place of the Old Ones, and angered All-Mother. This was her punishment. Her family was dead because of her. She was outcast and never again would be part of All-Mother’s memory.
