The powered rail hooked the bottom of the cart and pulled it forward,and as he squinted at the sunset on the other side of the hill his house was embedded in, the typically stoic, loudmouthed, sixteen years old boy, shed dozens of silent tears.

Making the mistake of looking back, the small red dragon gasped.
The whole grove was on fire, lit bright in red and orange and yellow and smoking that was his home, his family, his friends and future-
Tommy shook his head. His pale yellow feathers along his spine were stiff in fear, and the small dragon tried to flatten them, but to no avail. The dark red plates along his belly and neck itched, especially around his neck, and his wing-shoulders were getting tired with how tight he was holding his half feathered wings in.
Trying to run, he limped through the forest for what felt like years, until it was dark and cold and Tommy needed to find somewhere to sleep.
He could still smell smoke.
or, a dragon-shifter who had been living in the forest over half his life finally learns to trust again.

Summary
Is it running from your problems if your problems consider you to be a dead imprint of consciousness that killed their son? Yes, but Danny tries not to think about how his nightmares of his parents trying to kill him came true when they found out he was Phantom.
After being on the run from his parents and the government for a couple of months, moving from town to town, Danny ends up in Gotham City and decides to risk staying in Batman's territory. He'd take the wrath of Batman over live vivisection via beloved parents or being studied and torn apart by the government. Besides, he's not a meta. Being dead is a medical condition.

Summary
Living and being alive are two different things. Tommy was living, but for a long time he wasn't alive. The world didn't want him to be, seemingly intent to keep kicking him down time and time again. Until his mother had enough. He was given somewhere safe to heal, and things finally changed.
Or, Tommy dies and ends up in Hermitcraft. The healing process is a long one, but he takes to it in typical Tommy Style.
