Summary
She took a shaky breath as gave up on getting the door open and turned again to face the slobbering menace. There was no other way out of this. She gripped her dagger with both hands as if that might steady it as she shook and gave her best glare to the monster. She wouldn't die like this, a cowering mess begging for help that would never come.
Artemis wasn't the type to pray to the gods. She'd heard enough stories about the gods ignoring their children, abandoning them until they needed something for themselves. She knew that there was only slimmest chance to gain their blessing, but she needed every sliver of miracle she could get.
She closed her eyes and began to project her thoughts, I know you probably don't care about me, but I really need—
"Hey, Blondie, in here!" a voice yelled and Artemis' eyes snapped open, looking at the vent grate near the ceiling that she didn't remember seeing before. There was a boy with his head poking out the vent, looking a few years younger than her with sunglasses and dark hair hidden under a grey hoodie.
OR
Artemis is getting hunted by a hellhound and her saviour comes in the form of a prepubescent kid in a vent.

Summary
For the longest time, Roy believed he was normal. As normal as a kid with no mother could be, but that never bothered him. His dad would whisper to him as he fell asleep stories about nature and everything's place in it. He would tell him of the streams that cut hills into ravines. Of the way trees became homes for dozens of smaller animals, using their branches and their bark to protect them. Of how when the wind blew just right, you could hear the melody of it buffeting the leaves and whistle through cracks in the walls. Of how he was the perfect son, a gift from the gods.
Then one day, the stories stopped.
OR
How eleven-year-old Roy Harper found out he was a demigod, featuring a dead father, an angry chimera, and two green dudes that don't know how to deal with children.

Summary
Mumbo was trying very hard to pretend this was normal, what he was doing. That when a random man he didn’t know showed up on his doorstep and proposed to him, it wasn’t the weirdest thing to ever happen to him. He didn’t know how well he was hiding it when the stranger wanting to be his husband was sitting across from him, staring like there was something on his face.
There was a slight point to his ears, just noticeable enough to make Mumbo aware that this man might not be human, but not exaggerated enough for him to be certain. He didn’t know what, but something was certainly making Mumbo anxious in the awkward silence. He fiddled with his sleeves as he did his best not to look into the other man’s eyes, his gaze eventually landing on the plate of biscuits.
“Do you want one?” the stranger asked, and Mumbo met his gaze for a moment, confused.
“Why are you offering me my own biscuits?” he asked, and the other man shrugged.
“I was just asking if you wanted one, I wasn’t offering it to you.” He reached down and took another one in a swift movement.
OR
Mumbo is very in his own head, and Martyn wants to commit marriage fraud.

Summary
Meanwhile, Jimmy lay on his stomach with his face buried in the pillow, his golden wings splayed out to his side but not large enough to touch the floor, or even span the whole bed. He listened to Joel rant and storm around the room, and Grian furiously mumbling on the bed next to him. The noise was annoying, but it was what Jimmy had gotten used to in the years he'd spent with Grian and the few months he’d spent with Joel. At this point, it’d be less of a comfort if he weren’t worried his companions would get them kicked out of the inn.
OR
Jimmy makes a mistake, Joel gets upset on Jimmy's behalf, and Grian does his best.

Summary
In his lap sat a notebook made from some leather he’d gotten at some point. With one hand, he kept the pages still, and with the other, he scribbled down every detail he could think to put in his build. He was happy with how the sketch was coming along, and soon, it would only be a matter of gathering and organising the materials he needed, and being flexible enough to change if need be.
For now, that could wait. He slipped the items back into his inventory and leaned forward to look out at the land he’d chosen to set up in. Long grass covered the ground in need of some hoeing, and various flowers were showing just barely through the overgrowth. The pond in the middle of the meadow had a few sugarcane stalks growing along the edge in their early stage of growth. However, it was not the state of the overgrowth that drew the elf’s attention. It was the figure that stood almost waist-deep in the water with an empty bucket in his hands and a proud grin on his face as salmon and cod swam around and explored their new home.
Jimmy.

Summary
People.
They appeared time and time again. Always a new person, or couple, or family, but none that were willing to give him company. The same faces never returned, no matter how rude they were towards their guide or how wide a smile they left the house with. There was never a reason good enough to stay.
He wished it weren’t the case. He wished someone could see him and the other monsters that called this place home. But it had been so long since Will had gotten anything he wanted.
OR
William Wisp is dead, and he is so, so very alone. Until one day, someone returns.

Summary
The sky was getting dark when they reached the checkpoint. A rope ladder hung down from the tree, and Dakota walked past it, despite him being the one to have suggested the stop over the one they passed a few hours earlier. He realised it was because of the human’s comparably worse vision than Vyncent, as they didn’t have darkvision.
“Hey, Dakota, you ran past it,” he called out. Dakota didn’t notice until Will tapped him on the leg from his seat in the sled. He slowed to a stop and looked down at Will.
“What is it Will?” he asked, not out of breath.
“Vyncent found the treehouse,” Will gestured behind them to the elf standing by the rope ladder.
“Great job Vyn!” he praised and turned around in an arc to account for the sled trailing behind him.

Vyncent tries to hide that he's not human and William goes detective mode.

Summary
That night, however, he couldn’t bring himself to move, staring out the window and looking as a shadow moved about. It was a big creature, made bigger only by his childish imagination and fear. When lightning flashed he could see it tearing into something under its grip. He even thought he saw it moving when he first caught sight of the scene, but if it had been alive, it wasn’t by the next flash of light.

The five times something went bump in the night and only Will knew it and the one time everyone else knew too.

Summary
The whole world had been thrown into chaos, thousands dead and many more in a panic before Ashe’s parents let anything slip. Then all at once, they packed everything they had into suitcases and left the city to escape the ensuing chaos, though no one could outrun the apocalypse.
What he had now, being locked away on an island of outlaws, wasn’t as bad as it could have been. It was better than wandering the land as a corpse, which likely would have happened if his dad hadn’t taken them here. He resented the situation but couldn’t complain, not after what he’d seen on the mainland.
He played the drums quietly, not wanting to disturb the neighbours and get complaints.
He’d barely started playing a distant boom echoed across the island. He dropped his drumsticks and hurried over to his bedroom window. A cloud of smoke was beginning to form above the laboratory and he could see people moving into and out of the building.
OR
Ashe finally gets the chance to do something.

Summary
Dakota had been here a few times, sometimes guiding wanderers who didn’t want to make the demanding trek to New Haven or sometimes finding people who wanted to join the Prime Task Force. Sometimes he would stay here for a place to rest for the night.
But usually, no matter what he came here to do he always did the same thing at some point in his visit. Trading.
After the apocalypse started, money became obsolete in most places and many didn’t want to share their supplies with strangers. Some people would steal from others, but foraging and trading became the main way of getting goods.
OR
Dakota and Vyncent go shopping and get an unexpected deal. Also rats.

Summary
It was meeting day, for the Unwitness Protection Program and they were in Aiden’s basement this week. It had been almost a month with no supernatural activities.
At first, they thought it was like the other times they had some time off. Then the second week came around and they started to get nervous. In the third week, they went around looking for trouble, but none was there.
It was way too normal. William didn’t know what to think about it. All the theories his friends tossed around weren’t sitting right with him, and neither was anything he could think of. He was the detective, the smart one. He found all the little clues everyone else missed. How could he claim that title when he was just as dumbfounded as the rest of his friends?
OR

Summary
Being in the open was a risk. It made him an easy target of anything wanting to attack him and it made it harder to hide when he needed to. But it gave him the advantage of being able to see anything that tried to sneak up on him.
Not being in the open had its risks too. It was harder to tell when there was something nearby and it meant getting lost was much easier. If he got lost it could very easily be the mistake that unravelled him. The upsides were that it was easier to stealth around, and it was likelier to find prey when his supplies ran out.
Virion usually decided to be in the open. He liked being aware of his surroundings and having a heads-up before running into anything, friendly or not. It was obvious that the person behind him wasn’t attempting to sneak.

A zombie apocalypse isn’t the best time to be alone. Vyncent and Dakota meet for the first time.
