(Heavily inspired by the fucking AMAZING prompt by gamergirl_lumine on tumblr)
In canon, we’re told Lance got his Altean marks as a reminder of his love for Allura.
But what if he got them through different means? What if they stood as a living memento for him to look at every time he sees his own image, reflecting his inherent belonging to the lions as their paladin?
His story may have begun in the sunny beaches of Varadero, but Lance has traveled far further than he ever thought he would, sprawling out across the universe with first Blue, then Red. But what if there comes a time after the original lion swap in which Keith and Shiro are both indisposed and Lance needs to step up to the plate and pilot Black?
Will she accept him? Or will the barrier remain raised once more, leaving the fate of the universe on the wrong side of history?

Summary
“Mail for you.” Lance’s mom gestured towards the table. She was pretending to be casual, Lance could tell. But she was watching him out of the corner of her eye, and it made him tense.
There was an envelope on the table. It was thick paper, and closed with a golden seal.
Lance picked it up and stared at it. He knew what it was. He had already decided that he wasn’t going. He couldn’t bring himself to. He could barely bring himself to open it.
He tossed it into the trash can.

Lance is a farmer. He really doesn't want to be, but what else is he even capable of? He got left behind.

Summary
“Are you lonely?” Keith’s words sound blunt, even to him, but he can’t really stand another second of hearing Lance excuse away his closest friends letting him down.
Lance just waves him off. “Man, I do miss Kaltenecker, ya know, these Earth cows just don’t measure up to her. Other than that, I’m fine. I mean-” He sweeps his arm out towards the fields with a gesture of overexaggerated pride. “I’m a landowner in my twenties! In this economy! I’m living it up down here.”

While every other paladin continues to explore the galaxy and how their talents and dreams fit into it, Lance stays on Earth. Alone. Only four months after Allura's death is he visited by none other than his awkward, mulleted ex-teammate, who tries to leave the door to space open for him through his grief.

"You hid an injury." Keith was at the end of the cot, gripping the bed frame with knuckles turned white. He looked so angry his face had gone pale in places, and he trembled. His black eyes danced like hot coals in the base of a fire. "And then you took on a druid all by yourself and got yourself cursed."
