While not considered a reward by Barristan, the events that follow cause an incredible change in Jaime’s life. He is brought to the city to squire for Barristan the Bold and train with the rest of the Kingsguard. The presence of Genna and Jaime in the city have a greater impact than the king imagined, and House Targaryen turns on itself with House Lannister caught in the middle.

Summary
Helaena had always been strange, often only Aemma could soothe her melancholic moods as a child and now she stood before him, soft blue eyes that reminded him of a summer sea. Her mother's eyes, as a pang of regret filled him even as his daughter stood clad in a dress of black and red, yet all he could see was Aemma in her features. From her smile, to her rare laughter it was obvious just which parent she had taken after more, and at times it hurt him to see it.
Taking a shaky breath he begins to speak, “I, Viserys Targaryen, first of his name, King of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm, do hereby name Helaena Targaryen, Princess of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne.”
In other words, what if Helaena Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen swapped roles?

Otto asks his young, beautiful daughter to got to the grieving King in her mother's dress, alone, and at night. This is generally remembered as a very bad idea, and leads to much pain and suffering that could have been avoided. If only Otto had not sent her. If only Viserys had not accepted her. If only Rhaenyra had caught them.
But maybe the solution was even simpler than that. Maybe all that was needed was for Alicent Hightower to have the strength to ask for help.
