Mickey didn’t realise that elevator doors could close this slowly.
He slammed on the button again and again, willing the door to shut before Ian could catch up to him. The last thing he needed was to be stuck in such a small space with the one person he desperately didn’t want to see.
“Mick!” Ian called at him from down the hall, clearly wanting him to hold the elevator. Mickey ignored him, pushing the button faster. The universe never had been very kind to him, and Ian slipped through the doors before they could close fully. Breathing deeply, Mickey rubbed a thumb over his eyebrow as he tried to ignore the piercing green eyes burning a hole in his head.
“Mickey, c’mon hold up,” said Ian.

Mickey grunted. “I’m just hungry, man.”
Ian pushed himself up so they were sitting side by side. “Bet I can distract you for the next twenty minutes.”
“Like to see you try,” scoffed Mickey. Ian raised an eyebrow.

“Why the hell are you here, Ian?”
Mickey’s tone is defeated, and his shoulders barely hold their shape. He’s tired. Exhausted, really. Ian can see that in every line of his body, every curve of his face.
There’s so much that Ian wants to say to him, so much he wants to scream across this phone line connecting them, but he can’t. His head is a mess, in more ways than one, and no matter how fast he tries to parse through his tidal wave of emotions, he can’t figure them out.
He broke up with Mickey. Right?
Only now, he can’t really remember why.
“I don’t know,” Ian says honestly, and hopes it’s enough.
