After ten years of radio silence, Edward receives a letter in the mail from his father containing two major revelations: he's Xerxan royalty, and he's expected to travel to Xing to marry one of their princes, Ling Yao. While he initially wants to ignore his father's demands, he can't pass up on the opportunity to travel outside of Amestris and learn more about alkahestry - until he can join the military, it's his best chance at finding a lead to get his brother's body back.
Meanwhile, Ling resents that he's expected to settle down and get married so young, before he's had a chance to secure his right to the throne. Marrying a descendant of the man who brought alchemy and alkahestry to Xing is a good way to keep the emperor's favor, though, and he still wants to find a way to achieve immortality; Edward's expertise in alchemy and ties to Amestris might provide a valuable opportunity.
