Summary
Ellie slows down and looks back at Joel with chagrin, raising her eyebrows and pursing her lips, but she elbows Sam and gestures for him to wait for Joel and Henry to catch up. He’s reminded with a pang of another little girl on another hiking trip, a far less perilous trip than this on one of the trails outside of Austin, scampering up a boulder that screamed a broken collar bone or broken ankle to him, but she made it down unscathed, rolling her eyes at his worries. Like every memory of her, it’s tinged with the reminder of how, ultimately, all of the worrying he did wasn’t enough, still left her dead, blood staining her favorite t-shirt.
Ellie and Sam are waiting when they catch up, back to giggling over some inside joke. Joel shakes his head, shouldering his backpack and forging ahead.

Two weeks into the Cordyceps outbreak, Tommy and Joel go looking for their father in Houston. Maybe there is still something to hope for.
Joel was shouting, dragging Tommy away by his backpack. Tommy’s mind caught up and he turned, following his brother down a dark street. As they ran more infected peeled out of fresh shadow, careening toward them, falling, skidding, smacking into one another in their deranged sprint. He and Joel swerved sideways to avoid another clutch and he saw two hit one another so hard that teeth shattered from gums. There was no making a brave stand. There was only the breath searing their lungs as they sprinted faster, faster, putting on speed they didn’t even know they had. His calves burned. His boots pelted the pavement. Tommy stopped looking back. To look back was to die.

He expected her to side-step the question – she was good at that. The look she gave him now was a thoughtful one, however. She mulled the question over in her head for a few moments, her brow furrowed. “Maybe…” she began, and there was some hesitation there, “maybe before all of this, I would have been open to it. Not…at first. I really think that I had to live a good life for a while before I was capable of…of thinking about motherhood in a way that wasn’t as painful. But there was a choice to be made there: having a baby, or keeping you. You asked me to marry you, and it seemed like the obvious choice – so I chose you.” She pressed a hand to the side of his face, her palm gently pushing against his cheek as though it alone could cure the devastation that had settled across his bruising features. “Apparently, I’ll always choose you.”

Summary
Joel carries him into the living room, where the Legos are back in their bins and there’s a little block of a room with no roof and Shimmer wedged in it on the coffee table. Joel doesn’t put JJ down; he thinks about those words he told Rafa, about how much harder they cling to their babies because of the ones they’ve already lost, and he sinks down into the couch with JJ still pressed against him. He sits there in the silence of the storm, with the wind banging a little on the shutters and the fire crackling in the hearth and the bubble of the soup a muted hum at the back of his mind. He closes his eyes and remembers to breathe- remembers that he’s sixty seven years old and that there’s little else in this world he finds more comforting than having his babies close and safe and warm.
