Sam’s curled up tight in the backseat of a beat-up Dodge Charger, pale-faced and scratched to all hell and looking so fragile it wouldn’t be a surprise if so much as a gust of wind sent him crumbling into dust. But he’s also asleep, and that alone quashes any doubts Dean might have had about bringing him home.

Summary
All he can think as he stares at the scene from the doorway, his feet at a standstill on the threshold, is that at least it’s enclosed. Trapped behind glass walls, a lid on top to stop it from slithering out. It’s not enough, nowhere near as secure a cage as it should be, but it’s something. Better than he’s ever had before.
Or: Dean is afraid of snakes because they’re freaky. Sam is afraid of snakes because he has a history with one.

But over the past couple months Sam’s supped with God and the devil, had a hug from his long-dead mom, seen his brother restored to life. So yeah, maybe he’s never quite sure that this isn’t an hallucination; not sure that he isn’t in the basement with the British, in the cage with Lucifer, in another of the Wednesdays that just won’t end. But in this reality, whatever its authenticity, what he’s seeing now outside the bunker isn’t alien enough to shock."

Death, as any salesman will tell you, is the process by which the existential dust that all people and animals and plants and some lakes are made out of finally ceases the energetic process of expending itself. Death is when the machinery of being gives up the ghost, so to speak. Death is not the primal dumpster of slavery (to quote Patricia Williams) nor the spectral something-ness of the disappeared (to paraphrase Avery Gordon).
Death is a yielding love letter to the stars. Put another way: Death is un-American.

Summary
An AU where Sam was in the Cage with Lucifer for a couple of weeks before Dean and Cas could get in.
On a hunt after Sam's second time with Lucifer, he's trying to maintain. Dean is still the guy who thinks of killing things and saving people as 'Sam's new rule' and Sam recognizes that as signs of Dean not being okay.
When push comes to shove, the brothers do their best to catch each other when they fall.
